About Psico
Chris Sharma was first introduced to psicobloc (“Crazy bouldering” in Spanish) by Miguel Riera in 2004 after seeing a video made by Filmmakers Josh and Brett Lowell. On the Baeleric island of Mallorca, Miguel had been pioneering climbing on the cliffs above the Mediterranean Sea since the 1980s. Isolated from the rest of the world, he climbed on cliffs with no ropes in solitude, because it made sense to him to use the ocean as way to climb freely without protection.
Once Chris experienced the freedom of climbing over water, it changed the course of his climbing career. He has since made it central to his story, establishing some of the hardest climbs in the world, creating multiple films (King Lines, Etc) focusing on the new style, and even creating an HBO reality TV show (The Climb) that featured Psicobloc as a central style.
After the 2002 Olympic Games in SLC, Utah, the Ski Jumping Center was a perfect venue for a competition that Sharma wanted to present to the world. In 2013, he collaborated with partners to bring Psicocomp to the world. Two climbers racing side by side on the now-iconic wall over a pool made everyone’s jaws drop. Risk, athleticism and spectacle all on display live- bringing the vision of Miguel to the world.
